My plan for the A - Z Challenge is to write every post as if it were a diary entry by a
character from my WIP. Today's post comes from Leah Walker.

Zellor. Sounds a bit like a place where Hobbits might live, but no. It's actually my home town in Cornwall.
It's pretty, very picturesque, the kind of place people think of when they imagine a traditional English village, with cottages and narrow, winding roads. It's a nice place to retire, but it's not a good place for young people.
I spent much of my childhood playing in my friends' back gardens, because there were no parks to go to, so we had to make do with what we had. It was a lot of fun, it meant we could stretch our imaginations and make up magical worlds to keep ourselves entertained.
It was when I hit my teens that Zellor became a nightmare. Hanging out at a shopping centre wasn't an option. In Zellor, there is one street where there are a few shops, and that's it. It has everything a small town needs, but nothing for a teenage girl who wants to start exploring what life has to offer. There was no cinema, no youth group, no clubs to sneak in to. Hanging out in the library was not my idea of a good day out.
My parents love Zellor. To them, it's the ideal place to raise a family. Sure, it's safe which is important, but that is the only good thing about it. It's a nice place to visit, but staying there, especially after being in L.A, would drive me insane.

So, I would like to say a gigantic thank you to everyone who stopped by and commented, who followed me, and who have given me so much support and feedback on my characters.Without you, I wouldn't have been so inspired to get my WIP finished! No doubt you are tired of these characters now, so I will let you have a rest before the book comes out lol!

Excellent description of the fictional Cornish village. I especially liked the comment about it sounding like a name of a place where Hobbits live. That, coupled with the description of tiny cottages and narrow, winding roads, makes me imagine Leah grew up in the Shire!
ReplyDeleteI'm not sick of these characters yet, but after the A-Z and completing your MS, I can see why you'd need a break.
My town's not actually that small, but it sure felt that way when I was a teenager. I think Zellor sounds pretty cool, but I can totally understand Leah's point of view. I've really enjoyed these snippets over the last month. I'm looking forward to reading the book when it's out. ;-)
