Life is wonderful for modern day harpy Meira Harper. Her jobs consist of wearing designer shoes and fetching souls for Zeus. Well, it's wonderful until she gets the command to collect the soul of the man she loves. She's willing to do whatever it takes to save Sam, even if it means him rejecting her for never revealing her true self and being turned into a poodle by Hera.

Sam Wright loves the simple things in life. Family, good people, and his beautiful girlfriend. When he dies saving a woman and her daughter, his soul is claimed by Zeus. What Sam discovers when he's taken to Olympus is that Meira managed to get him a chance to live by participating in three challenges set up by the gods. He may be a hero, but the gods never play fairly.

Meira and Sam have been dating for a few months. Their chance at a life together is taken from them, and though Meira believes she'll never get him back, she's going to make sure he lives. It's bad enough that Sam sees her true form as a harpy with her ugly bird feet, but he wants a simple life. No drama or lies. It's one thing to have her heart broken when Sam states he couldn't handle her lies, but to know that they could've never had a life together even if he didn't die tears her up inside.

It was a big challenge for me to not let this story turn into a tragedy. Meira and Sam go through the wringer more so than any other couple in the 13th Floor series. The gods are merciless, but so are the actions taken by one with a good heart. Pick up The Harbinger and discover if Meira and Sam find their happily ever after, the gods get what they want as usual, or if everyone ends up as yappy little dogs.
