Okay peeps, A-Z is over, and I'm ready to get back to some kind of normal blogging routine! I think I said I'd only be posting on Mondays and Fridays - I have no idea how that will go yet lol.
Today, I have a story for you, and a tiny plea for help!
A few weeks ago, the amazing Carrie Butler emailed me to let me know that ACX - the home of audiobook creation is allowing authors from the UK to turn their books into audiobooks. This was just about the best news ever because - well - I REALLY wanted a piece of that!
What I underestimated by a very long way was the cost. Yes, some voiceover artists will work for a royalty share of the sales from the audiobook, but they have to be absolutely certain I will sell huge amounts so they get some compensation. I am confident I can sell Game On audiobooks, but I completely understand why a voiceover artist would be concerned about putting so much time into a project without a guarantee of a reward. Nobody wants to work for free! So, I started to look for artists at the lower end of the payment scale.
There is some amazing talent out there, but even at the lower end, I can't stretch my budget that far without some help.
SO I took the plunge and set up a Kickstarter Project. Compared to many projects, the amount I need to raise is pretty small, but even so, I am very aware that it might not work. Of course, I want it to work out, but I need to be prepared, just in case. If I don't try, I won't know!
There are, as with all Kickstarter projects, rewards for donations. If you already have what is on offer, you don't HAVE to take the reward. It's up to you!
With that said, I am going to post the link for you to take a look at. PLEASE don't feel pressured to help out. I just figured a blog post was the fastest way to let people know what I'm doing!

Kickstarter Project Game On Audiobook Creation
Wow that is a big endeavor! I wish you luck. I wish I could help out but currently with two kids, and big debt I cannot. Maybe if I ever get my own book published I could start helping fellow writers out like that!
ReplyDeleteNo problem at all - I completely understand!
DeleteI wish you the best of luck! I haven't any money at this moment in time, but I did my best to spread the word.
ReplyDeleteThank you! <3
DeleteGood luck! :) That's great they opened up to UK authors, but wow! I never knew it cost so much. I thought for sure I knew some authors that found audio voice people to do it for free.
ReplyDeleteIt's expensive! The voiceover artists I spoke to all had the same response - my book is long, and they can't afford to put that much time into something that won''t guarantee a reward.
DeleteI am sure there are some who work for free, but I need someone who can work in a British AND an American accent convincingly, and capture the tone of the book perfectly. I'm not saying those who work for free couldn't do that, but I need to be absolutely sure I'm getting the best for my book. :)
I can see why they want to be sure they make money. I like money and I figure they do too ;)
ReplyDeleteI'll have to check it out.
Thanks, Elizabeth!
DeleteI wish you luck with raising the money you need so you can get Game On in audio format. This is a great opportunity for you! I apologize that I have no money to give. I'm facing the very real situation of not having any money at the end of this money. As in zero pennies in my bank account. But I'll do my best to spread the word. :)
ReplyDeleteThank you! I appreciate it! :D
DeleteWishing you the best and congrats on finishing the challenge. An audiobook would be great.
ReplyDeleteKickstarter is a GREAT idea! Wonderful, Kyra. So proud of all that you're doing. <3
ReplyDeleteBest of luck with getting the funds together and finding the right voice. :-)
ReplyDeleteThis sounds really exciting! Unfortunately we're pretty strapped at the moment with three kids and four dogs, but I'll send out a Tweet. Good luck!!
