Camp NaNo Update, and details

To begin with, I want to say thanks again to Emily for allowing me onto her blog as a blogging mentor! Being interviewed is always fun, and Emily is awesome!

So, to Camp NaNo! Four days in and I'm still on track! Well, I will be when I finish today's writing. :D

I mentioned a while ago that I was planning to battle boy POV, and I'm doing my best to get through it. However, it is hard, so I decided to turn my NaNo story into dual POV so it will be 50% less difficult! I'm not against cheating to get the work done. :p

Just to give you a quick recap on what I'm doing for NaNo: In Game On, I have a young soccer player named Jesse Shaw, and he proved quite popular during the A-Z challenge. So, I decided he needed his own spin-off story! It's set at the end of the soccer season, when Jesse and his best friend go to London. I don't have a proper synopsis yet, but this is my guideline for now

Soccer sensation Jesse Shaw literally has the world at his feet. After a successful first season in L.A, he heads to London with his best buddy, where he meets the girl of his dreams. Unfortunately, Jesse's dream vacation soon turns into a nightmare when a dangerous prank leaves his career in jeopardy.

That is fairly rubbish because I wrote it before I changed the story to dual POV, but it will do for the moment!

Jesse is a fun character to write - in spite of it being difficult to think like an 18-year-old boy. Finding his voice is challenging, but it's the good kind of challenging, not the kind that makes you want to bash your head against the wall!

And a quick Game On update: I have announced it's finished twice, and both times, there has always been more work to do LOL! So, I've handed it over to another CP (Thanks Elizabeth!) and now THIS IS IT! After this round of feedback, I need to stop working on it. There is such a thing as over-editing, and I don't want to suck the life out of the story. I hope to have a release date for you in a couple of weeks, and a cover reveal ... possibly at the end of this week, or the beginning of next week!

  1. Congrats on the great NaNo progress! I love dual POVs, they give a story some great diversity.
Good luck with the rest of NaNo :)

    1. Thanks! I like dual POVs too, but I've never written one before, so I'm excited! :D

Good luck to you too, I love your updates!

  2. Congrats on NaNo so far! Sounds like its going really well for you. The story sounds interesting. I don't usually read a sports story but I'm intrigued about the prank, especially if it's Jesse who's been foolish enough to do it.

I wasn't sure about writing a sports story LOL! I'm glad you like the sound of it! :D

  3. Congratulations on the progress, sounds like you're doing well. I love dual or multiple POVs, and you know how much a love Jesse.

Another CP is great, but no more edits! :P

LOL, I know, I know. I have gone editing crazy!

  4. Congrats on your progress! I think it would be so hard to write from the perspective of a teenage boy, I'm so impressed with those who can do it so well. Looking forward to your release date and cover reveal news! :)

    1. Thank you! :D

It is definitely hard to write from a teen boy's POV, but hopefully I will get more used to it as I get into the story. :D

  5. Yay for being on track. I know what you mean about it being hard writing from a teenage boy's perspective. I've never attempted to, but sometimes for me even writing the dialogue from a minor male character can get frustrating.

I've grown to appreciate dual POV novels.

  8. Congrats on all your progress! It sounds like you're doing really well - wish I could say the same for mine lol! Btw, I assume your 'NaNo' is the same thing as 'NaNoWriMo' (is that right lol?) except you're doing it over June, not Novermber? Also, I know this sounds really stupid, but what's a CP lol??

    1. Yeah, CampNaNo is like a summer version of November NaNo, from what I can tell.

Oh, that's not stupid at all! I didn't understand when I first started blogging either! CPs are critique partners. :D

  11. Dual POV isn't bad at all (Perfect Chemistry is one). Boy POV is hard because people have a preconceived notion of what it should sound like when an author is a girl. I've read many boy POV novels written by men that I thought the MC still sounded like a girl. But to each her own.

    1. That's interesting, I don't think I've ever read a boy POV book written by a man lol, I should probably do that sometime!

  13. I have some male POVs in my book and they were much harder for me to write than the ladies.

I love what you said about your book being finished, twice now, and each time there was still more stuff to do. I'm in the same boat and trying desperately to get to shore.

    Good luck with Camp NaNo...

  15. Ha! I have finally figured out how to comment on your blog because the "Add Comment" button doesn't initially appear. Success! I can stop lurking in the shadows.

So I love staying up-to-date on people participating in Camp NaNo -- I can't this June but I just think it's such a wonderful writing challenge, and I think writers have the best updates during the frenzied rush. I'm also interested in the fact that you write about soccer since I've played forever and coach every summer. I'm not sure I've actually ever read a book with a sport as a central focus, but I'm a huge fan of movies & TV shows that have that focus so I'm not sure why it hasn't crossed the entertainment bridge. Hm.

Good luck this week on Camp Nano & I read & loved your interview with Emily!

    1. Thanks, glad you can finally comment!

Soccer is pretty much the only sport I know anything about, and even that knowledge is limited - a little less so now lol! But it needed to be a sport, so that was the one I settled on. :D

  17. Hi Myra, I've jumped over here from E.R. King's blog and I've been having a look around your blog.

A fellow Camp NaNoer! I'm so excited to find another one. Most people in my blogging circle aren't doing it, which makes it a bit loney, especially when you're not sure people want to hear updates all the time.

    Good luck with Camp NaNo!

  30. A NaNo in June! Perfect writing weather if you like to write outdoors. :) Congrats on keeping up the progress. You're almost to the halfway point too. Changing the construct of the POV can induce many changes within a story, but I'm sure you'll handle them like a champ. Good luck!

IWSG: Performance anxiety

Welcome to the August edition of IWSG, hosted by the amazing Alex J.Cavanaugh ! So, as most of you know by now - because I haven't shut up about it LOL - my first novel, Game On, has been released. The blog tour officially starts next week (YAY!) but I find myself becoming increasingly nervous. A blog tour not only highlights my book, but me. What if people don't like me? What if my guest posts suck, and everyone thinks I'm boring? If I can't engage people in 300 words on a blog, they probably aren't going to pick up my book. And then there's the "what happens next" question. I plan to make Game On into a series, which feels a bit arrogant of me. I don't know how many people are going to like the first book, should I really be planning to keep the series going? So far, Game On has actually been incredibly well received. I've had great reviews, so maybe I shouldn't worry about people not liking it, but what if Book Two isn't as goo
