Music To Write By - A Guest Post from M.J Fifield

I have the awesome M.J Fifield here with me today as part of her blog tour for Effigy! Take it away, M.J!
Music To Write By, Part Two

Earlier this week, I talked about the music I write by, and how I create story-specific playlists for each book. Today, I thought I would continue that theme, by taking a closer look at some of Effigy's key tracks.

Music catches my attention first, but the lyrics ultimately determine if the song earns a spot on a playlist. Here are three songs which did just that:

Do What You Have To Do by Sarah McLachlan. If you've happened to have read Effigy, this song pairs with a scene at the end. It might be an odd choice with which to start, but this was the very first song to make Effigy's playlist, and the only song that has survived every revision of said playlist (as the story evolved, so did the music). I find this entire song to be so freakin' gorgeous, and every single line applies so perfectly to the scene, but the key lyrics are:

What ravages of spirit/ conjured this tempestuous rage/ created you a monster/ broken by the rule of love

My Skin by Natalie Merchant. It doesn't have a specific scene with which it pairs, but if Haleine CoileƔin had a theme song, this would be it. Key lyrics include:

I've been treated so wrong/ I've been treated so long/ as if I'm becoming untouchable/ I'm a slow dying flower/ frost killing hour/ the sweet turning sour/and untouchable

Iris by The Goo Goo Dolls. Effigy has a love story in it. As you can probably guess from the first song listed, it may not end particularly well, but there is a love story. This song is from the happier times. Key lyrics include:

And I'd give up forever to touch you/ 'cause I know that you feel me somehow/ you're the closest to heaven that I'll ever be/ and I don't want to go home right now

Do you ever come across songs which embody your stories, scenes or characters?

Thanks for stopping by today, and thanks to Kyra for hosting me today!

The survival of a once-mighty kingdom rests in the hands of its young queen, Haleine CoileƔin, as it slowly succumbs to an ancient evil fueled by her husband's cruelty.

A sadistic man with a talent for torture and a taste for murder, he is determined to burn the land and all souls within. Haleine is determined to save her kindgom and, after a chance encounter, joins forces with the leader of the people's rebellion. She gives him her support, soon followed by her heart.

Loving him is inadvertent but becomes as natural and necessary as breathing. She lies and steals on his behalf, doing anything she can to further their cause. She compromises beliefs held all her life, for what life will exist if evil prevails?

Her journey leads to a deceiving world of magic, monsters, and gods she never believed existed outside of myth. The deeper she goes, the more her soul is stripped away, but she continues on, desperate to see her quest complete. If she can bring her husband to ruin and save her people, any sacrifice is worth the price—even if it means her life.

  1. Cool when the lyrics really fit or can be integrated into the story.

    1. It really is. It's funny (I think) when I'm listening to a song, and all of a sudden I'm all, "This fits this scene perfectly!"

Followed by a mad scramble for pen, paper, and MP3 downloads.

    2. Hmmm. I think the computer ate my first comment...

I think I said something about how if I can find that perfect song, it can sometimes help me figure out what a character's journey is supposed to be. Or it'll get me in the right frame of mind to write it. Behold the power of music!

    1. Glad to know I'm not the only one who loves that song. I think I've been in love with it since the very first time I heard it.

  6. Iris is one of my favorite songs. Most of the music I hear all day involves The Fox, Nom Nom Nom, and Teen Titans GO! Hmm, those mixed together might make for an interesting premise. :)

  7. I don't really write to music, but if I did, I'd probably stop and imagine what music my characters would listen to and write to that. That could be annoying, though, since I write about 12-year-olds!!! Lots of Ariana Grande and One Direction.

  8. I love Iris, it's a great song. And a great choice for a love story theme.

  9. I think MJ is seriously SO COOL. Always have. And fab post. I center stories around music for sure.

And Kyra, after MJ's thoughts, I'm curious about YOU and music….especially after having read your latest book! :)

  10. Excellent and moving song choices. I have a playlist for each book, and like you, the lyrics play a major role in the selection. Usually a song is associated to a particular character in a stage in their life.

I will keep these songs in mind when I reach the ending of Effigy!

  12. I think the husband sounded especially interesting; it made me wonder what their marriage had been like. And I like writing to music too; Sarah McLachlan is one of my favorites because her voice is so soothing. I often write in cafes, and I like the music that they play; it's usually conducive to writing because it sounds good but isn't too distracting.

IWSG: Performance anxiety

Welcome to the August edition of IWSG, hosted by the amazing Alex J.Cavanaugh ! So, as most of you know by now - because I haven't shut up about it LOL - my first novel, Game On, has been released. The blog tour officially starts next week (YAY!) but I find myself becoming increasingly nervous. A blog tour not only highlights my book, but me. What if people don't like me? What if my guest posts suck, and everyone thinks I'm boring? If I can't engage people in 300 words on a blog, they probably aren't going to pick up my book. And then there's the "what happens next" question. I plan to make Game On into a series, which feels a bit arrogant of me. I don't know how many people are going to like the first book, should I really be planning to keep the series going? So far, Game On has actually been incredibly well received. I've had great reviews, so maybe I shouldn't worry about people not liking it, but what if Book Two isn't as goo

Dust It Off Bloghop!

Welcome to day one of the Dust It Off Bloghop, hosted by Theresa Paolo and Cortney Pearson ! This hop is all about the WIPs you wrote, and then shelved! Okay, so I am teaming up with Clare Dugmore for this one, because back in 2006 - yup, we've known each other THAT long lol! - we started to write a book together. Unfortunately, other commitments got in the way and we never finished it - but even so many years on - it's still something we remember fondly, so we're going to dust it off for you! The first day, May 3rd: We want you to post a 1-2 sentence pitch (Great way to practice pitches) about the shelved WIP. Here is the pitch Clare and I came up with: For best friends Caitlin and Tori, their first acting job out of Uni opens up a whole new world for them – unfortunately, it wasn’t the world they were expecting. When the strains of adult life and tangled relationships threaten to ruin their friendship, they are forced to take a look at what’s really importan
