Honesty Cover Reveal + The Obligatory Query Letter Post

Morning! Today I have two things going on on the blog! Firstly, Carrie Butler's cover reveal for Honesty! How gorgeous is this?!

Honesty (Mark of Nexus #2)

Category: New Adult
Genre: Urban Fantasy

Book Description:

Note: This title is best enjoyed after Strength (Mark of Nexus #1) and Courage (Mark of Nexus #2).

Cole Blake is more than just a roguish ladies’ man. He’s also a dedicated worker—so dedicated, in fact, that he’s willing to blackmail his boss with a falsified sex tape in order to keep his job. And his proactive efforts don’t end there. After hours, he uses his Dynari abilities to moonlight as a vigilante, keeping his neighborhood safe from drunks, dealers, and would-be thieves.

Until a mistake stops him dead in his super-accelerated tracks.

Now burdened with the closest thing he’s ever had to a conscience, Cole struggles to justify his once-reckless actions. It’d be all too easy to give in to his darker impulses, especially with ERA making dangerous advances toward their goal of revolution, but embracing that hatred could jeopardize the few relationships he actually cares about—including his pursuit of the saintly Rachel Ranford. No, in order to keep everyone safe, he’ll have to come clean about his warring compulsions and ask for help... before his dark side takes over.

Congrats, Carrie! This looks amazing!

Next up, I want to talk about something I never expected to talk about. The dreaded query letter.

Here's the thing... I always thought I'd self-publish everything. It's faster, there's more control, I can set my own pricing and make my own covers... I'm too impatient for the whole querying thing.

Then I wrote a book that felt... different. All my books feel special, if they didn't, I wouldn't publish them at all. But this one... there's just something about it. And I still might not go down the querying road BUT if I do, I need to get it right.

The thing is, the query letter scares the bejeezus out of me. There is so much to it, to getting it right. While I understand what I'm supposed to do, I can never quite manage to nail it.

So, I'm looking for some help. Best places to look for tips on writing a great query, some of your own tips, and... hell if you wanna help me write it, just let me know lol!

Thank you!

  1. Have you made use of the Water Cooler community yet? Their forum titled "Query Hell" is aptly titled, but it's also incredibly useful. You have to participate a bit before you can put something up for critique, but I think it's well worth it. It can be pretty harsh though. Not sure if you're familiar with it, hence the wordy explanation. Either way, I feel your pain - I suck at writing queries.

Congrats Carrie!! Loving the sound of this book. :)

  3. Check out Matt McNish's blog for wonderful tips on writing queries. He also does query critiques on his blog and you get fabulous feedback from him and his readers. http://theqqqe.blogspot.com/

  4. I'd recommend Matthew's blog as well.
    Great cover, Carrie!

  5. Good luck to Carrie and her upcoming release Honesty!

And Matthew and his followers helped me much with my query letter.

  6. Honesty looks really good. I love the idea of Cole's dilemma. As for querying, sigh, it's so hard. One thing that can help is to read queries for books you've read, if you can dig them up online. Kristin Nelson has some good videos about writing queries on You Tube and I would recommend getting as much feedback as you can once you start drafting. Good luck.

  7. I love QueryShark. It's so helpful. Falling for Fiction is another blog that critiques, and they do a great job.
I'd love to take a look, if you need more eyes. :)

  11. Query Shark, Absolute Write and Nathan Bransford's forums are all fantastic! The now-defunct Miss Snark (blog) also has awesome examples, especially check out her query "crap-o-meters" where she offers line edits and reactions. Good luck!

  12. Matt's QQE blog is a great resource for query writing. I could look too but I'm no expert. Carrie's cover looks great.

IWSG: Performance anxiety

Welcome to the August edition of IWSG, hosted by the amazing Alex J.Cavanaugh ! So, as most of you know by now - because I haven't shut up about it LOL - my first novel, Game On, has been released. The blog tour officially starts next week (YAY!) but I find myself becoming increasingly nervous. A blog tour not only highlights my book, but me. What if people don't like me? What if my guest posts suck, and everyone thinks I'm boring? If I can't engage people in 300 words on a blog, they probably aren't going to pick up my book. And then there's the "what happens next" question. I plan to make Game On into a series, which feels a bit arrogant of me. I don't know how many people are going to like the first book, should I really be planning to keep the series going? So far, Game On has actually been incredibly well received. I've had great reviews, so maybe I shouldn't worry about people not liking it, but what if Book Two isn't as goo

Dust It Off Bloghop!

Welcome to day one of the Dust It Off Bloghop, hosted by Theresa Paolo and Cortney Pearson ! This hop is all about the WIPs you wrote, and then shelved! Okay, so I am teaming up with Clare Dugmore for this one, because back in 2006 - yup, we've known each other THAT long lol! - we started to write a book together. Unfortunately, other commitments got in the way and we never finished it - but even so many years on - it's still something we remember fondly, so we're going to dust it off for you! The first day, May 3rd: We want you to post a 1-2 sentence pitch (Great way to practice pitches) about the shelved WIP. Here is the pitch Clare and I came up with: For best friends Caitlin and Tori, their first acting job out of Uni opens up a whole new world for them – unfortunately, it wasn’t the world they were expecting. When the strains of adult life and tangled relationships threaten to ruin their friendship, they are forced to take a look at what’s really importan
